Job Description

Position Overview

UPROSE is launching a bold archival initiative to document our organizational legacy and uplift the stories of Puerto Rican pioneers and frontline leaders who helped shape the trajectory of our work. We are seeking a Community Archivist (or advanced archival research intern) to help lead this process. Working closely with UPROSE staff, creative collaborators (including a filmmaker and visual artists), and our intergenerational base, the archivist will help shape a powerful retrospective to be showcased at UPROSE’s 60th Anniversary celebration in Spring 2026.

Core Responsibilities

  • Organize & assess existing archival materials, including photographs, campaign flyers, organizational records, media clippings, and other documents

  • Identify archival gaps and work collaboratively with longtime members, elders, Board of Directors, and youth to recover and preserve overlooked or at-risk materials

  • Collect and curate oral histories with past and present leaders to capture personal and political narratives central to UPROSE’s history

  • Develop a narrative arc or timeline that traces six decades of organizing work, placing it in historical and cultural context

  • Collaborate with artists and filmmakers to integrate archival content into a multimedia historical retrospective

  • Support community engagement efforts , including public programming (e.g., pop-up exhibits, scan-a-thons, storytelling circles) tied to the project

  • Apply anti-colonial, anti-racist archival practices that center community agency, transparency, and consent

  • Help establish systems for long-term stewardship and accessibility of the archive, including metadata protocols, digital platforms, and preservation strategies

Qualifications

  • Enrolled in or recently completed a graduate program in Library Science, Archival Studies, Public History, or a related discipline

  • Experience with community archives, oral history, or participatory research practices

  • Deep respect for and familiarity with Puerto Rican history and culture; understanding of Black and Brown organizing traditions and the climate justice movement

  • Spanish-English bilingualism strongly preferred

  • Comfort with digitization workflows and archival tools (e.g., Omeka, Archive-It, Audacity, Google Drive, etc.)

  • Creative thinker with strong organizational skills and a collaborative, self-directed work ethic

  • Demonstrated commitment to racial, climate, and social justice

Timeline & Compensation

The project will begin as soon as possible and run through May 2026. This is a stipend-based contract position. Compensation will be determined based on experience and availability, with flexibility in scheduling to accommodate students or emerging professionals.

To Apply

Please submit a brief letter of interest, your resume or CV, and a sample of past archival or research-based work (can be a portfolio, writing sample, or project summary) to specialprojects@uprose.org.

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, with priority given to those received by Friday, July 11th.
